Marius Anton van Willigen (Marten) was born on 20 September 1962 in Haren (Gn). After completing the Gymnasium at the Reformed Lyceum in Groningen, he studied the Greek and Latin Languages and Cultures at the University of Groningen, where he graduated in 1988. From 1986 to 2018 he taught for almost 25 years at two high schools and two grammar schools Greek and Latin, and he taught Ancient History for 28 years at a University of Applied Sciences and additionally he has also taught NT Greek at the Protestant Theological University for several years. In 2008 he received his doctorate in Nijmegen on the sermon on Joseph in the church father Ambrosius. In the four years that followed he was a guest researcher at Tilburg University. A few months after his doctoral thesis he founded the Stichting Bijbeluitleg Vroege Kerk, a foundation which enables the publication of various studies in the field of the Early Church and he also established the Chair of the Early Church's Bible Interpretation there. On 20 June 2019 he held his inaugural lecture at the Theological University of Apeldoorn and since that time he has been the professor of this chair in Early Christian Exegesis.
